The much-awaited trailer for Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, was launched by superstar Amitabh Bachchan Tuesday afternoon. The sequel to Vidya Balan’s 2012 hit is set to hit theatres on December 2.
Vidya, who also featured in the 2012 film Kahaani, essays a 36-year-old woman wanted for kidnapping and murder in the second installment of the suspense thriller series. She is called by two different names in different situations in the trailer – Bidya and Durga.
The two-and-a-half-minute long video starts with a shaky Vidya answering a phone call when she is asked to reach a certain place if she wants to see ‘Mini alive for the last time’. Later, we discover Mini is Vidya’s daughter.Soon, Durga meets with an accident and goes into a coma. Arjun Rampal, who stars as Sub Inspector Indarjeet Singh, is in charge of the case and finds that the woman is also a wanted murderer.
There are several layers to the narrative. While one layer tells us Durga is a wanted criminal for abduction and murder, the other one hints at Bidya being the kid’s saviour. Vidya Balan is both Bidya and Durga: Is it a double role or dual-identity? There are also hints that the child has faced sexual abuse.
Much like the 2012 hit, Kahaani 2 looks like a one-woman-against-the-entire-world sort of a story. Apart from the suspense and thrill the trailer offers, there is a very strong feminist angle as well. A 36-year-old woman playing the saviour of a girl child. Both Vidya and Arjun are impressive in their parts.
